This is a spiritual wake-up call for you and all the people you companion. Please join us.
The Enneagram is an invaluable tool in spiritual companionship because, in the words of presenter Sandra Smith, “it deepens awareness of specific patterns that lull us to sleep in our lives.”
The beauty of this ancient wisdom system is that once we are aware of our tendency to sleep-walk through life, it becomes far easier to wake ourselves up.
Anyone engaged in spiritual care, regardless of tradition, can benefit from this webinar series because The Enneagram is ultimately a self-tailoring, non-judgemental spiritual practice. Like all spiritual companionship, it begins – and continues – with the invitation to listen to what resonates deep within us and to build authentic lives.
This four-session series is designed for spiritual directors/companions – as well as chaplains and other spiritual guides – who want to learn how to use the Enneagram system with those they companion. In three of the sessions, Sandra and Chris work directly with a webinar participant, who knows their Enneagram type, to demonstrate engagement with the Enneagram in a spiritual companioning session.
Sandra C. Smith and Christopher T. Copeland are Certified Narrative Tradition Enneagram teachers who, together, have over 30 years of Enneagram teaching experience. Graduates of Wake Forest University and Candler School of Theology, both are spiritual directors who engage the Enneagram as a lens in the companioning process. Chris and Sandra co-host the podcast, Heart of the Enneagram, with more than 100,000 downloads in over 80 countries. Their book, Heart of the Enneagram: A Companion for Deepening Personal and Spiritual Growth, contains poems, quotes, and prayers for each of the Enneagram types and engages readers in the spiritual practice of journaling through guided questions.
Course Description
Session1: Introduction – The Enneagram as a Map of How We Process Our Lives
Chris and Sandra introduce the Enneagram as a map of our internal processing system and the automatic patterns that flow from a particular way of processing. They share what the Enneagram is and is not, as well as best practices for using it in spiritual direction. Additionally, they offer an overview of each of the nine Enneagram perspectives as well as the three centers of intelligence: Head, Heart, and Body. Brief contemplative practice begins and ends the session.
Session 2: Head or Thinking Center – Demonstration & Discussion
Focusing on the Head or Thinking center of intelligence, this session explores common themes for types 5, 6 & 7. Sandra and Chris demonstrate working with a directee who leads with one of these types. A time for questions will follow the demonstration. Contemplative practice bookends this session.
Session 3 : Heart or Feeling Center – Demonstration & Discussion
This session examines common themes for types 2, 3 & 4, all part of the Heart or Feeling center of intelligence. A live demonstration, with a participant who leads with one of these types, will be followed by a time for questions. Contemplative practice will begin and end the session.
Session 4: Body or Sensing Center – Demonstration & Discussion
Exploring the Body or Sensing center of intelligence, the fourth session highlights common themes for types 8, 9 & 1. Chris and Sandra companion a webinar participant to demonstrate spiritual direction with those who lead with one of these types. This final session ends with a time for questions. And, of course, we will offer a brief, but invitingly deep contemplative practice to end the series.

Please Note
Our presenters suggest that those who register for this webinar not go online to take an “Enneagram test.” Both Sandra and Chris find these to be more confusing than helpful. For those who are new to the Ennegram and want to learn more about your “type,” Sandra and Chris invite you to purchase The Essential Enneagram by Dr. David Daniels and Victoria Price. You may then read the nine paragraphs on pps 5-7, select the two that most resonate with who you believe yourselves to be, see the answer key on pg 9, then read about those two types in this book.
Additional Information
Each session session will run 75 minutes.
