Spiritual Companioning, Queer Lives, and the Spiritual But Not Religious

This session will focus specifically on those who are Spiritual But Not Religious (SBNR) within the queer community.  The session will include trends and recent research about the SBNR experience, in general, and the significance of this within the queer community.  Through short presentations, personal reflections, and small and large group dialogues, we will apply the information to our own experience and to our spiritual companioning practice, exploring how we can best support queer directees who seek spiritual depth without religion.

This session is for those that identify as This session is for those that identify as LGBTQIA+, including nonbinary, gender fluid, genderqueer, bi-gender, and agender spiritual directors and spiritual companions who would like to connect with other LGBTQIA+ spiritual directors and spiritual companions.

About Rev. Dr. Zandra Wagoner:

Rev. Dr. Zandra Wagoner is the Interfaith Chaplain at the University of La Verne. She is an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren and holds a Ph.D in Religious Studies. As Chaplain, she directs the multi-religious Office of Religious and Spiritual Life and also teaches for the Religion/Philosophy Department, including introductory courses in religion and specialized courses in the areas of gender/sexuality, contemporary theology, interfaith cooperation, and the environment/animals in the study of religion. She is actively involved in interfaith efforts locally and nationally.  Dr. Wagoner provides spiritual companionship, one-on-one and with groups.  She received her Spiritual Direction training with Sillpoint’s Art of Spiritual Direction Program.  She has also received training and incorporates various modalities of spiritual direction, including Eco-Spiritual Direction, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Bio-Spiritual Focusing.  She is a certified SoulCollage® Facilitator, a Qualified Administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventory, and is currently learning the art of telepathic Animal and Nature communication from Maia Kincaid’s Animal Communication Certification Program.

Please only sign up if you have checked your calendar and you know you can attend. Saving a spot immediately might seem like a good strategy. But the problem is many people then discover they have a conflict and the spot is not used. Thank you for your kindness in this. Please only sign yourself up. Your registration will be linked to your e-mail address. Remember that we will do more of these free sessions. If you miss out this time around, there will be more opportunities.

What to Expect:

Each session runs about 75 minutes. Each session will be hosted by one of the SDI Staff, and an experienced facilitator from the SDI Community. Guidance from the facilitator will include brief teachings, contemplative readings, and space for meditation/silence.Each session will include Breakout Groups of 3-4 participants, where each participant will have to opportunity to share and to hold space for one-another.

We will not record these sessions to preserve the confidentiality of all participants in the group spiritual companionship.
