Profile: Teresa Cowan Jones, M.Div., is a spiritual director with 27 years of experience, speaker, retreat leader, executive and wellness coach, an ordained progressive minister, former Director of Spiritual Wellness at Canyon Ranch Resorts, and founder of the Compassion Coalition, the Mayor’s Book Club, and Breakthrough Leadership Institute, a transformational leadership and community development initiative. As such, she directs its premier program, Sacred Space (sacredspacecommunity.org), a secular and interfaith community in sixteen cities and six countries that builds skills of compassion through contemplative practices to fuel social justice.

A fellow in the Public Voices Fellowship and Harvard University's Spiritual Innovator Cohort, she is also author of over one hundred tools for effectiveness. Teresa holds a B.S. in Psychology and a Master of Divinity with highest honors from Vanderbilt University (1996). A professionally trained coach, she has served as coach and faculty of the Center for Progressive Leadership ( a national nonpartisan leadership organization developing high-potential political leaders who can affect policy making) and has twenty years of professional experience in leadership development in both the public and private sectors.

Teresa is a certified facilitator in Compassionate Integrity Training (CIT) and was founding and lead coach for CIT at the Center for Compassion, Integrity and Secular Ethics at Life University in Atlanta, Georgia. She also has served as an instructor at the Center for Integrative Medicine, a pastor and hospice chaplain, faculty and spiritual director of the Hesychia School for Spiritual Direction, university chaplain, and developed and taught university courses in sociology.

APPROACH:
Teresa’s approach is based in deep listening, unconditional love, contemplative practices, the world’s wisdom traditions – especially their mystical roots; the science of human development; and if an additional coach approach is desired, the neuroscience of behavioral change. Through insight, compassion and humor, her integral approach emphasizes awareness and practice. She is passionate about helping people discover the authentic self and using her gift of seeing various levels of reality affecting behavior to aid people’s discernment and fulfillment. Integrating practices that aid healing and the quality of one’s everyday life is central to her gentle companionship.

She works comfortably with people from all backgrounds, including atheists and agnostics, and maintains a dogma-free space to make meaning and help directees find paths forward in a way that honors their unique journey.
