In This Issue

“As we go deep within, steeped and marinated in contemplation, we will find ourselves soaked through and through, down to every molecule of our being, not only swimming in deep waters, but being symbiotically permeated by them, until no separations remain between us, and Everything.”

Articles

Bruce Tallman, D. Min.

The world seems to be even further from finding fulfillment in God than back in 2014. In fact, one thing we can predict with certainty is that there will be more and more pain and more and more people will be asking “Where is God in all this?” This in turn, will create a greater and greater need for spiritual directors.

Focus

Rev. SeiFu Anil Singh-Molares

On the cover of this edition of Presence, SDI’s Creative Director, Matthew Whitney, offers a lovely, and inviting, depiction of two deep water swimmers supporting one another on their treks.  This image, and the analogy of navigating the deep, offer a profound resonance with the calling of spiritual companionship, one worth pondering.

Sexual trauma creates embedded shame that says, “Something is wrong with me; I am not worthy.” Many victims of sexual trauma, especially children, internalize it as their fault. Many survivors struggle with trusting God. There is a greater stigma attached to sexual abuse than other types of traumas, which can cause the survivor to keep silent.

Presence: An International Journal of Spiritual Direction is published in March, June, September, and December. Presence offers a forum among diverse people and spiritual traditions for the exploration of present and future trends in the art and ministry of spiritual direction. Presence is grounded in the belief that our deepest calling is to be present to one another as we share the gift of ourselves. Presence strives to articulate the essential elements of contemplative practices, formation, and training; to encourage accountability; and to develop clear ethical guidelines. Presence supports a global contemplative dialog of spiritual care and compassion for others, ourselves, and the whole cosmos. ISSN 1081-7662.

Opinions expressed in this journal are the opinions of the authors and advertisers and may not represent the opinions of Spiritual Directors International, the coordinating council, or the editors. All biblical quotations are from the NRSV unless otherwise noted.
